"Brhan-Natya
Yagna" (brhan in Sanskrit means big) jointly organised by the Association
of Bharatanatyam Artistes of India (ABHAI) and the Brhan Natyanjali Trust,
Thanjavur to celebrate the 1,000th year of the Peria Koil built by Raja
Raja Chola, 1000
dancers from different parts of India and abroad performed Bharatanatyam
to music & choreography by Padma Subrahmanyam.

British Council,
Madras Naturalists’ Society and WWF-India Tamil Nadu State Office together
are celebrating the Wildlife Week with the theme of Biodiversity
from 30 September to 7 October 2010. As part of this week long celebration,
they will be organising a number events like exhibitions, film screenings,
seminars, competitions, quizzes and much more. Some of these events require
registration. Attached flier will give you complete details on the series
of events.
The United
Nations has declared the year 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity
celebrating life on earth and of the value of biodiversity for our lives.

Fort is an
important landmark of the Chennai city and the museum it houses holds precious
history, maintained excellently by ASI. Sriraman is presently in-charge
of the Fort Museum and has carried out extensive work in it to make the
visit to the Museum memorable.
In order to
make the Museum visible and also participate in its development, Friends
of Fort Museum is formed by ASI.
Fort Museum
is housed in the historic Exchange Building within the Fort St. George.
It is a period museum maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
It was established in 1948 by Col. D.M.Read to preserve the relics of the
Raj that was scattered in around the fort. Later, many citizens and institutions
of Madras enriched the collection of the museum by donating objects of
colonial period. Select objects from the collection are on display reminding
the visitors of the colonial heritage of the city. For the past few years,
ASI has taken efforts to reorganising the galleries of the museum.

The 70THYEAR
BHAGAVATA MELA NATAKA MAHOTSAV, a unique blend of bhakti, music, dance
and drama, is scheduled to be held on and from the 19th May 2010. The centuries
old Utsav is held annually with religious fervour in the sannidhi of Lord
Sri Varadaraja, the presiding deity of Melattur, as part of celebration
of Sri Nrusimha Jayanti. The ritualistic Bhagavata Mela tradition, a Telugu
Heritage nurtured in Tamil country, richly deserves a vast support from
the art-world. Came into being as a result of Bhakti movement about 450
years ago, it is not far different from the Kuchipudi Bhagavata Mela. The
Bhagavata Mela Mahotsav-2010 features not only Bhagavata Mela Natakas,
composed by Melattur Venkatarama Sastry (1743 - 1809 A.D), but also many
fitting events akin to it.
Added Feature
in 2010 Year Utsav - For the past 20 to 35 years, the dancers, supporting
artists and the men behind federate in votary and veneration to the tradition
with no per diem. Added to this, S Natarajan, as a dancer, director and
patron, would be completing his 63 years of yeomen service for the cause
of Bhagavata Mela. Furthermore, in May 2010, he would be completing 52
glorious years of donning the challenging heroine role of Chandramati in
the Bhagavata Mela natakam 'Harischadra.'

S. Rajam passed away on Friday, 29 Jan, 2010. He was 91 and survived by
two sons and two daughters.

Padma Awards, the country’s
highest civilian awards, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma
Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The awards are given in all disciplines/
fields of activities, viz. art, social work, public affairs, science and
engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports,
civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished
service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma
Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced
on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
2. The awards are conferred by the
President of India at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan sometime around
March/ April. In 2010, the President has approved 130 awards including
13 in the category of Foreigners/ NRIs/ PIOs. These comprise 6 Padma Vibhushan,
43 Padma Bhushan and 81 Padma Shri awards. There are 17 ladies among the
awardees.
