Art Exhibition ‘ FOREGROUNDING the BACKGROUND’ by Art & Soul - Art Gallery on ECR

‘FOREGROUNDING
the BACKGROUND’ - an exhibition of Paintings & Sculptures by P S
Nandan, A P Pannerselvam, G Raman, A Selvaraj & Late.T R P
Mookiah.
Exhibition from Sunday 25 Sep to Thursday 13 Oct 2011 - 11 am to 10 pm (* Monday Holiday )
Inauguration was by V P Dhananjayan & Shanta Dhananjayan on Sunday 25 Sep 2011 - 6.30 pm.
The background or generally ‘the ground’ is variously known as space
from which every form emerges. A white canvas can be intimidating
or inviting to an artist. The form that emerges from every stroke of a
painter’s brush or a sculptor’s chisel is but the disturbance on this
blank space. Is the painter sculpting in this space or creating
over it? This question has always been an enigma that fills the creator.
‘Foregrounding the Background’ - showcase of works of five artists who have
confronted this enigma in their media and evolved personal styles that
address the conflict of the ground and the theme.

Ragamala:
Paintings from India
22 October 2011 to 8 January 2012
Brighton Museum & Art Gallery
Free admission
A unique exhibition of exquisite Indian
miniature paintings. Ragamalas, generally
described as ‘music-inspired’ paintings,
flourished between the 15th and 19th
centuries. Painted under royal patronage
they illustrate moods and feelings, the
most common being love and devotion.
This exhibition highlights the strikingly
varied styles of Ragamalas produced
throughout the Indian subcontinent and
reveals the symbolism and emotion
contained within these intensely coloured
and detailed miniature paintings. The
exhibition is based on the collection of
Claudio Moscatelli, accompanied by Indian
miniature paintings from Brighton Museum’s
own collection.
