By C.S.Venkat, Class XI, Gill Adarsh MHSS, Chennai - 14

World cup fever is catching on. It is hardly a month before the top 12 teams clash for the cup. India has an advantage in that it has won the last cup played here . Will it repeat it ? Ok Bhai. Let us see the prominent players from the top teams which will clash here.

Australia
Australia is a a team in fine nick and is a very potential winner of the world cup . The Kangaroos have a deep batting line up which includes Slater , Bevan , the Waugh brothers, Ricky Ponting and extends upto Shane Warne. With an equally well placed bowling line-up headed by Warne, it is a potential candidate for the cup.

STEVE WAUGH

This guy can work wonders with any team. Has a pushy Medium Pace bowling which has a capability of taking the break for against the other team and has the ability to change the face of the match . A first class player on both the leg and off sides , he has the experience of a 150 plus matches to vouch for him . In addition this older of the Waugh Twins has a good ability to lead his team to victory against a side of any calibre.

SHANE WARNE

This guy with blond hair is the world's best leg spin bowler with his mesmerising line complete with his flippers ,googlies and flighters. Is a good man with the bat too. Is affable and jolly . His spin has been practically effective against any team ,except perhaps India and Sri Lanka . Has a variety in his bowling which any other spinner cannot even dream of. .His tricks and antics make him the best cricketer produced by the land of kangaroos after the Great Don .

MICHAEL BEVAN

This man is a silent killer. Looks a slow player since he does not play attacking shots and does not go bang at the spinners, but waits for the bowler himself to unknowingly get into his trap. The greatest advantage of him is that he can go bang if necessary and fits into any position easily without any change in his deadly form . Has the highest one day average of 61.2 perhaps the only person to have his one day average above 60 . If useless with the bat , can contribute with the ball, he is an ace spinner . Once he was selected for the tour of the Caribbean just due to his ability to bowl well. is good at the field too.

New Zealand

New Zealand is a little bit laid down low, but can strike unexpectedly at any time including this world cup. They have a rather deep batting line-up which is not exposed due the players being out of form,a mediocre bowling attack, and are a very good fielding side.

NATHAN ASTLE

This kiwi all rounder is the best batsman around in the kiwi squad so far . Has a soft appealing face, but is a dangerous player in the first 15 overs. Is easily good at going over the top or playing the ground shots . If he clicks for New Zealand can single handedly take away the world cup for his country. Is equally well in bowling his gentle medium pace - a boon to New Zealand when the regular bowlers get pelted all round the ground . Has the trickiness to stop the flow of runs and can take wickets at regular intervals

CHRIS CAIRNS
This curly haired guy is the best all rounder in the kiwi team . This guy has a fiery pace and can upset the apple cart of the other team with either his bat or his ball . He is a big hitter with the bat and can make the ball leave the park with an effortless stroke . Deadly in his peak but is a little bit down now . Whether this man make his team win the golden cup is to be seen .

CHRIS HARRIS

This balding man is excellence personified . Has a never give up type of attitude . Is a good all rounder capable of getting the important batsman out . Is a very good pinch hitter has three centuries to his credit . He leads from the front when his team mates are down . Remember the match against Zimbabwe when he won it single handedly when the odds were against his team with that last ball four. Here is a man who is underrated by any time .Could turn the odds in favour of New Zealand just the way Martin Crowe did it in 1992.

West Indies

BRIAN LARA

This man from Trinidad and Tobago is the the best batsman around in the world after Sachin . Got the highest score in tests(375n.o) in Sabina Park Jamaica. Though this man has not shown his heroics in ODIs , he is always a force to reckon with. He was laid down a bit low during the series against Australia this year but is back to form with superb centuries in the second innings of both the matches. He has a good cricketing brain and lot of imagination , a boon to his team . Is a very good fielder has one of the safest pair of hands in the Carribeans .Whether this Pole Star of a fading galaxy of Carribean Cricket can take home the the cup which his team lost to India in 1983 at this very same place can win it is to be seen .

COURTNEY WALSH

This ageing workhorse is the last of the galaxy of great fast bowlers produced by these sunny islands. he has a earth shattering speed with a slow runup . Got lots of experience in handling batsmen in the world arena. Has performed well even in the Sub-Continent where the pitches offer least support to quick bowling. Can effectively pull down the run rate of the opposing team and pick wickets up the same time. This guy due for retirement may be playing his last world cup. His experience may be helpful in taking his teams to win the cup.

SHIVNARAINE CHANDERPAUL

This young man is the most promising youngster in the indies at present . is a good batsman . Has learnt to play equally well quick bowling and spin bowling . Infact, he is one of the few who play spin bowling well in the islands . Has an Attacking Attitude very important for one day matches . In addition he can bowl off spin in the time the teams needs it . Is a good fielder also . So he makes a very fine one day player indeed.
