When choosing a kitten, check that it is bright, at least six weeks old, that its coat is soft with no bald spots, its eyes and nose have no signs of discharge and under its tail is clean also.
A kitten that scratches its ears and holds its head tilted to one side may have an ear infection and this is easily treated. A kitten that sneezes or has runny eyes and nose may have feline respiratory disease (cat flu) which, particularly in some pure-breds, may never clear up.
Healthy kittens are alert and responsive and like to play roughly with each other, with people and with toys. Don't worry if your kitten takes frequent naps; this is normal behaviour while kittens are growing quickly. It is the listless, lethargic kitten that is likely to be sick.
whatever the age of the cat you choose, take it to your vet for examination and advice as soon as possible after you bring it home.
