Part of an ICSSR-funded research project titled "Digitalising
Chettinad Architectural and Cultural Heritage in Tamil Nadu for
Sustainable Knowledge Management: An Empirical Analysis," conducted
by a research team of Christ University, Bangalore. This project aims to
document and digitalize the tacit knowledge embedded in Chettinad's
architecture, craft, and cultural heritage. Using geospatial modeling,
IoT sensors, 360° 3D virtual tours, and immersive media technologies, the project
seeks to create a sustainable knowledge repository that aids in heritage
preservation and dissemination.
About the project and team Aim To publish articles that highlight the significance of Chettinad's
heritage and the role of digital technology in its conservation.
The multidisciplinary team is led by:
• Dr. Balakrishnan C - Associate Professor, Department of Computer
Science, Christ University, Bangalore (Project Coordinator)
• Dr. Fr. Biju K C - Professor, Department of Media Studies, Christ University, Bangalore (Co-Project Coordinator)
• Dr. Anitha Suseelan - Professor & Head, School of Architecture,
Christ University, Bangalore (Co-Project Coordinator)
The research focuses on preserving and documenting Chettinad's
architectural and cultural heritage using advanced digital tools such
as:
• 360° imaging & spatial audio - Creating immersive digital experiences of Chettinad's heritage spaces
• Geospatial modeling & IoT applications - Analyzing and mapping architectural conservation techniques
• Sustainable building practices - Studying materials like Athangudi tiles, lime plastering and traditional woodwork
• Cultural storytelling & oral history - Documenting rituals, folklore, and indigenous knowledge
