The Kattaikkuttu Sangam announces a first-of-its kind Diploma Course in Kattaikkuttu (also known as therukoothu) starting on October 2, 2025.
The 10-month program provides hands-on training in acting, singing,
movement, and Kattaikkuttu’s repertoire under the guidance of Guru P.
Rajagopal and experienced teachers, including graduates of the
Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam. Participants will also learn to play a musical
instrument (harmonium, mridangam - dholak, mukavinai). Upon successful
completion, graduates will receive a Diploma and be well-prepared for
roles in Kattaikkuttu theatre or contemporary theatre and film.
Open to individuals over 18, the course has a limited enrolment of 20
participants. While prior experience in the performing arts is welcome,
it is not a requirement. The course will be held at the
Kattaikkuttu Sangam in Punjarasantankal, located 8 km outside
Kanchipuram.
The course fee is ₹ 7,500 per month or ₹ 75,000 for the entire program.
Registration closes on July 15, 2025
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an in-person interview

In their Talk for THT, Dr V Ramanathan of IIT-BHU, Dr Venketeswara Pai
of IISER Pune and Prof M D Srinivas of CPS, Chennai examine a less-known
but significant system developed within the Tamil Astronomy tradition,
discussing the 12th - 13th century astronomical work Cūḍāmaṇi
Uḷḷamuḍaiyān by Tirukkoṭṭiyūr Nambi, which uses a vowel-based numeration
scheme (uyirēḻuttu) to encode arbitrary numbers by a method that is
significantly distinct from systems mentioned above. In
particular, its use in encoding lunar longitudes and its application in
the formulation of the 248 Candravākyas (sometimes referred to as the
Pañcāṅgavākyas) in Tamil.....Read more
